Solar Opportunities
for Local Communities

Where are citizens and local communities in the efforts to decarbonize electricity production, democratize the energy sector and increase incentives for the use of solar energy at the EU and national levels? We offer answers to these questions through a series of expert, educational and fun sessions within the three days of the Good Energy Festival in Zagreb. The Program of the Good Energy is open to citizens, community energy initiatives, experts and practitioners in the field of renewable energy, representatives of public institutions, and all good energy enthusiasts. The main language of the festival is Croatian, with simultaneous translation to English for selected parts of the program.

Community energy in Europe - the Netherlands

KEYNOTE: Siward Zomer, Energie Samen (Netherlands)

The Netherlands has revolutionary conditions for fostering community energy. We will get to know them with the help of Siward Zomer, who participated in their creation and secured a non-binding energy target of 50% ownership for local communities in the Netherlands.

The energy transition to energy democracy. Past, present, future.

KEYNOTE: Dirk Vansintjan, REScoop.eu and Ecopower (Belgium)

Good energy is nothing new – in some European countries, it has a long tradition in which community energy initiatives from Croatia and neighboring countries have found numerous role models. We will learn from Dirk Vansintjan, one of the founders and leaders of community energy movement in Europe, how its development has progressed over the last decades and what its perspective is in the light of current socio-economic challenges.

15:20 - 16:30
Solar energy VS. the energy crisis

We have a lot of sun, and almost the least solar power plants in the European Union. What needs to be done to make better use of the natural resources we have? Can citizens be the bearers of this change and how? We are talking about solar energy and its role in creating resilient and energy-independent communities in Croatia.

Solar Cinema at Dolac: We the Power & The Odyssey

The Good Energy Festival brings you solar-powered film screenings at Zagreb’s favorite market – Dolac!

On program on May 5:

We the Power (38 ′, David Byars, 2020)

Imagine a different energy system, in which the power to produce clean, renewable energy is in the hands of us, the citizens. We the Power film follows individuals across Europe – friends, family, visionaries, who face legal barriers and return energy production from the hands of large energy companies to the hands of citizens. The film follows energy cooperatives from different European countries as they pave the way for renewable energy and healthier and more financially stable local communities.

21.15 The Odyssey (122 ′, Jérôme Salle, 2016)

In 1949, Jacques Cousteau left the Navy to explore and document the ocean. This biographical film follows his oceanic adventures over a thirty-year period, during which he followed all forms of underwater life and encouraged their protection.

Learn how to grow your energy community

WORKSHOP

Where to go from the initial idea and enthusiasm towards the realization of the first community energy project? In this workshop, with the help of Stanislas d’Herbemont from the European Federation of Energy Cooperatives REScoop.eu, we will present steps for the development of local energy initiatives. The workshop is intended for all who want to participate and build sustainable, resilient, and energy-independent local communities.

15:00 - 16:30
Geek talk - Share your extra energy!

To switch to renewable energy sources, we must change the energy system itself. Until yesterday, “production follows consumption” was valid, and from today, “consumption follows production” should be valid. What does this actually mean for citizens? Come listen and discuss advanced concepts in energy such as energy communities, automatic consumption management, energy sharing with neighbors, charging electric vehicles and more.
